Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Crafts
One distinguishing feature of what has traditionally been thought of as "craft products" or "craft production" is what has been termed "the human presence."
While the tools used by crafters have obviously evolved, developed, and changed over the course of human history, new technologies in the 20th and 21st centuries have arguably altered the "human presence" in producing the objects of craft work. Concern about the most recent advances in computer-based generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) has begun to spread widely in the decade of the 2020s, particularly as it is used in such creative genres as writing, music, visual arts, and "voice-based" creations.
In craft work, AI has already become a game-changer in CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programming. AI can enhance efficiency, precision, and productivity in several ways, e.g, through automated programming (AI can analyze CAD (Computer-Aided Design) models and automatically generate CNC machining G-Code, reducing manual programming time and errors); and through Real-Time Optimization, in which AI can monitor and adjust CNC machine parameters like cutting speeds and feed rates — in real-time — to optimize machining processes.
A noteworthy recent response and challenge to the ever-increasing visibility of works created using AI is clearly articulated in a website and organization called "Verified Human," which aims to be a voice for authenticity by empowering creators "to maintain trust and transparency in an AI world." The consortium of organizers of Verified Human have endeavored since 2023 to create multiple labeled levels of "VH" standards for artistic or expressive products that can be used by musicians, writers, visual artists, and voice actors. These labels can be used by creators to indicate the extent to which their expressive creations embody "the human presence."
While the use of AI in tangible CRAFT creation is not yet as widespread or evident as in those other creative genres, the founder of Verified Human has observed that AI is creeping into the craft world in subtle ways, such as:
3D-printed “handmade” items sold without disclosure
AI-generated woodworking plans passed off as original
Mass producers using AI to spin false “small-batch” narratives
It certainly would seem appropriate for organizations like the collective behind "Verified Human" to create labeled standards for craft production. As of 2025...stay tuned!
