Historic:
A Pioneer rural craft, in that people with limited access to stores and peddlers might make their own candles as a matter of necessity. Yet in urbanized areas, candle and soap manufacturers flourished in the earliest days, and used locally produced lard, ashes, tallow, and kitchen grease for their production.
Pioneer candlemaking in Kentucky is illustrated in the 1941 film "Kentucky Pioneers."
